5 Vintage Chic Alternatives For Layering

Your mum always told you to take a jacket, but what are some other ways to layer up during shoulder seasons? Here are some less common solutions to making your summer wardrobe go further.

CUFFS

Like leg warmers for your arms, a pair of short cuffs can instantly and easily add warmth. A basic colour will go with everything, but don't be afraid to pick something with some detailing like lace, embroidery, or other embellishment. They also make a great easy knitting, crochet or sewing project! Check out Instructables or YouTube for tutorials.

PETTICOAT SKIRTS / HALF SLIPS

Not just for nanna, a petticoat adds another layer or warmth that can be easily removed if needed. Cotton ones feel great against the skin and won't give you static, but nylon tends to be smoother and will allow the fabric over the top to move more freely. Some petticoats are used for shaping the silhouette, a look popular in 1950s fashion popularized by Dior's New Look in 1947. Try a few styles to see what works for you.

SHORTS

Witches britches were popular in the 1960s/70s, but even if you're not looking for modestly while riding your broomstick they're a great solution to the cold. The modern version is the bike short, but for a more vintage twist try the old school version complete with lace at the hem!

BERETS

Channel traditional french elegance with a beret instead of a beanie - just as easy to wear and infinitely more chic!

GILET

Pronounced 'gee-lay', this is a sleeveless jacket. These days it usually takes the form of a puffer vest, but take your pick of fabrics - denim, faux fur, or leather can all work well with a vintage wardrobe.
